Tiger Musky
The PNW has Musky? Well, yes and no. What we have is cross breed of a Male Northern Pike and a Female Muskellunge.
These fish were planted in local lakes to help control the Pike-Minnow population starting back in the 1990’s. I’ve been fishing for these apex predators for 7 years now and they will drive you absolutely insane. Many won’t even look at your presentation, no matter how good. Others will slowly follow a few feet back and never close the gap, and a few will even charge full speed, only to spin off mere inches from your fly and retreat back to their cover or lye.
Its not for the faint of heart, and I like to describe it as a full body contact sport. Best to find a buddy to split these trips with, as throwing an 11wt and 7” flies can get a little demanding, but 100% worth it.
Prime time is anywhere between late April and September.
