Carp
The Columbia River is a massive watershed. Famously known as a super highway for Salmon and Steelhead, anglers have been targeting anadromous fish here forever.
What almost everyone looks past though is it’s unbelievable warm water fishery. Particularly, Carp. With over a 150 miles of prime habitat and flats, the Columbia River in my opinion is the most underrated Carp fishery in the world. Crystal clear water, tailing fish, and the average size is what makes this fishery so great. You’ll have shots at 15lb fish everyday, but there are giants in the 20-30lb weight class as well. Our largest fish this past season was 27.5lbs.
But these fish will test you. Spooky does not even begin to describe them. The smartest fresh water fish on the planet with a brain the size of a walnut are extremely anxious. This cannot be overstated. Utilizing one of the most sensitive lateral lines of any species, their large eyes, barbells that are continually tasting their surroundings rivaling any Michelin Star Chef’s palate, and an inner ear able to detect the smallest vibration at an unbelievable distance, they are by far the most challenging species I have targeted in the Lower 48.
They are also incredibly social and will warn other fish in their area by swimming 10, 20 and sometimes 50 plus feet to physically run into their buddy alerting them of our presence. So if you are looking to scratch that sight fishing itch of the Bahamas, Mexico, or Louisiana contact me sooner than later. At this point my Summer Season sells out a year in advance with Anglers getting first right of refusal for the following Season.
